Roughly the size of a deck of cards, the Fujifilm FinePix Z1 is small enough to slip into your shirt pocket with room to spare. The 5.1-megapixel ultracompact features a bright, clear, 2.5-inch LCD, a nonprotruding 3X optical zoom, and Fuji's Real Photo Technology for improved low-light shooting. Although there were a few issues with the Z1's picture quality in certain instances, the camera is a very good point-and-shoot ultracompact, providing novices and experienced shooters with a variety of easy-to-use features.

The FinePix Z1 is Fujifilm's impressive entry into the sleek, aesthetically-driven region of the digital camera market. At 3.5 x 2.2 x 0.7 inches and 5.3 ounces with battery and xD-Picture Card, the camera condenses into a small, easily portable package at the expense of control spacing and handling. The compact design houses 5.1 megapixels of resolution and a 3x zoom lens, both pretty common specs among other similarly styled models; however, the Z1 squeezes it all (including its non-extending lens) into a durable monocoque body, and achieves above average image quality while doing it.

tylish yet solidly built, the Fujifilm FinePix Z1 has an internally zooming lens that keeps it thin and pocketable. This 5-megapixel ultracompact also houses Fujifilm's fifth-generation Super CCD HR sensor and new RP processor, which seem to have succeeded in giving the Z1 standout low-light shooting capabilities. However, the Z1 keeps its feature set mainly to the basics. It lacks a continuous-shooting mode and manual controls, and even its scene-mode selection is minimal. If that doesn't bother you, this snapshot camera will give you competitive performance and photo quality, especially when the lights are low.

The FinePix Z1 ($399) is Fuji's entry into the ultra-thin camera market. Using the same "folding lens optics" system as the Sony T series, Nikon Coolpix S1, and the Minolta X series, the Z1 is just 0.7 inches thick. The FinePix Z1 uses a 5.1 Megapixel SuperCCD HR sensor which allows for lower noise levels at high ISO sensitivities when compared to other cameras. Other features include a 2.5" LCD, VGA movie mode, and support for USB 2.0 High Speed.

The attack of the slim cams has been in full force ever since Sony introduced the T1 over a year ago. Now Sony, Casio, Nikon, Panasonic, Samsung, and others are lining up to line your pocket. Fujifilm's entry into this competition is the FinePix Z1 ($340,street). With 5MP, 3x optical zoom (36-108mm equivalent), and a 2.5-inch scratch-resistant LCD screen, it's got all the standard features found in the rest of the slim cams. And it's stylish black, slide-me-open-and-turn-me-on front plate adds the requisite touch of individuality. But it's also got a few important features that set it apart from the pack.

While the lack of manual controls may put some off, the Z1 offers an ideal combination of point and shootability with bags of style despite the handling compromises. And like the F10 before it, Fuji's Super CCD HR sensor with which the Z1 is equipped works well; the Z1 is capable of producing stunning images and I can recommend it heartily.

I was flipping through New York magazine, when I came across a full-page spread for the FujiFilm FinePix Z1, in their "Best Bets" section. It's a "sleek ... credit-card-size" camera, the caption read, "that hits the sweet spot for amateur shutterbugs." Since I'm currently on my own search for a super-slim, five megapixel camera, I decided to give the people at FujiFilm a call to see if I could get my hands on a model and test it. While the FinePix Z1's photos didn't floor me, I found it to be a very competent point-and-shoot - and it certainly has style to spare.

The Fuji Finepix Z1 is a five megapixel digital camera with a three times optical zoom lens. It is an ultra compact model that will slip easily into a pocket or small bag. This is a very straightforward camera. There is very little you need to learn before you can start taking photos. It is just a case of charging the battery, loading the memory card and off you go. The Finepix Z1 is therefore likely to appeal to anyone who is looking for a digital camera that can go anywhere with you and is also easy to use.

Preview: Just before the big event the PMA show 2005 in Orlando, USA kicked off, Fujifilm surprised design lovers with the introduction of the Fujifilm FinePix Z1 digital camera. This incredibly neatly designed digital camera is a real jewel to look at. The Fujifilm steals the show with a beautiful mat shaded black metal housing, and the camera shows its high class. Fujifilm has a long history in the field of photography and the camera that makes photography possible. The commencing of producing a digital camera already lies far behind us and it is a good feeling to experience the digital evolution from the construction of the first generation of digital cameras until the new Fujifilm FinePix Z1.

The Fujifilm FinePix Z1 is among Fujifilm's latest ultracompact digital cameras, and offers a great combination of ease of use, style, and image quality (particularly at higher ISO sensitivities). Based on a fifth-generation Super CCD HR chip design, the Fujifilm Z1 offers good resolution in a pocket-friendly body, with a resolution of 5.1 megapixels. With a prism-folded 3x zoom lens that contributes to the camera's compact size, and straightforward user interface, the Fuji Z1 is an excellent take-anywhere point and shoot model that should appeal to novice users and more experienced shooters alike. The Fujifilm FinePix Z1 is flat, without any protuberances, and roughly the same size as a deck of cards. It offers a 5.1 megapixel resolution using a Fujifilm CCD HR and has a fully internal 3X optical zoom.

Fully metal-clad, the z1 is extremely compact and sports a black front, top and bottom while its back and sides are silver. The Z1 is turned on by sliding back its front cover, revealing the lens and flash and activating the bright white Self-timer lamp to the left of the flash for a few seconds.

There can be no doubt that the FinePix Z1 is a great looking camera, and it will appeal to the fashion conscious social photographer. It has extremely fast performance, is easy to use and sufficiently robust to survive living in a handbag or coat pocket. It's just a shame that the image quality doesn't live up to the Z1's gorgeous exterior.
